Gordon Grayum

Gordon Hazard Grayum, 84, died peacefully of pneumonia on Jan. 17, 2009.

He was born to the late William Hebard and Norma Quein Grayum on Jan. 19, 1924 in Puyallup.

Gordon graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle and, after serving in the 10th Mountain Division of the Army during World War II in Italy, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington’s College of Forestry.

He married his high school sweetheart, Colleen (Mickie) Kelly on Aug. 25, 1945. He was a one-woman man. Mickie was his one-and-only from his teenage years until his death.

Gordon and Colleen traveled the Northwest, then the world while raising their four children.

Gordon worked for West Tacoma Newsprint, the state Department of Natural Resources, the World Bank and Manke Lumber as well as owning his own forestry consulting and surveying business.

Gordon valued honesty and integrity in all people of all races in his work. It was very important to him to be known by his co-workers as someone to be trusted and counted upon.

The Grayum family moved from Bothell to Tacoma to Forks to Seattle to Tahuya to Bangladesh to Guyana to Allyn to Shelton and finally to Langley. Gordon and Mickie also spent many years living in an RV and seeing the United States.

Gordon is survived by wife Mickie, son Mike and his wife Susan, daughter Rebecca, daughter Bonnie, son Bill and his wife Laura, brother Bill and his wife Jackie as well as 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at Shelton Presbyterian Church, 1430 Shelton Springs Road, Shelton.
