Harold D. Barnett

Harold D. Barnett, 85, died Sept. 5, 2003, at Mountain Glen Retirement Center in Mount Vernon.

He was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Silverton, Ore., to E.E. and Evelyn Dalton Barnett.

He was married to Frances Greenup on April 8, 1937, in Klamath Falls, Ore.

Mr. Barnett and his brother, Ernie Barnett, purchased Barnett Implement Co. in Mount Vernon from their father and continued the operation for many years. Mr. Barnett and his family lived in Mount Vernon, but built a summer home on Moran Beach near Deception Pass State Park. In the late 1950s, Harold sold his half of the business to his brother and retired. They made Whidbey Island their permanent residence.

In Everett he started a second Barnett Implement Co., which he eventually sold to its employees. After retiring for a second time, he began a career as a furniture salesman for Norm Oldenburg at Oak Harbor Furniture.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mount Vernon. He was also a life member of the Mount Vernon Elks Lodge, Coupeville Lions Club, Oak Harbor Navy League, a former member of the Oak Harbor Rotary Club, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a life member of the Pacific International Trap Shooting Association (PITA) and the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He enjoyed trap shooting, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by wife, Frances, in 2000.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Linda Jo and David “Buz” Stoddard of Omak; seven grandchildren, Linda Stoddard of Bellevue, Mitch and Shari Stoddard of Bainbridge Island, Lisa Jo and Barry Bearinger of Camron Park, Calif., Merriah and Keith Geisler of Wenatchee, Holly Barr of Omak, Stacy Kay of Coupeville and Janet and Terry Isbell of Issaquah; 16 great-grandchildren; two nephews; a niece; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Many good friends at Mountain Glen Retirement Center will miss him.

Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 12 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, with the Rev. Carol Harlacher of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Oak Harbor, officiating.

Memorials may be made to Skagit Valley Hospice or the Coupeville Lions Club. Arrangements were under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
