Margaret Lois R. Hook

Lois Elizabeth Reece Hook, age 93, passed away at Harbor Care Community, Oak Harbor on June 5, 2006. She was born March 24, 1913 in Hardin County, Iowa to Ross G. and Clara Madden Reece.

Lois was raised on a farm near New Providence. She was very active in local 4-H programs and was an Iowa State 4-H champion in sewing. She graduated from high school in New Providence and attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa studying to become a home economics teacher during the height of the Great Depression. She taught in Sewall, Yarmouth and Hubbard, Iowa over the next six years.

Lois quit teaching to marry Staman Eugene Hook on Oct. 12, 1940 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple moved to Phoenix, Ariz. where she completed her teaching degree at Arizona State University in Tempe. During World War II, Staman was called to military service and Lois returned to Iowa to be with family and to start raising their first son, James. Following the war, Lois and Staman moved to Denver, Colo. where Staman started working for United Airlines and joined the Colorado Air National Guard. Their second son, William, was born in 1947 in Denver. Lois again assumed the primary homemaking role when Staman was called to serve in the Korean War. She was active in PTA, Scouts and church.

In 1962, the family moved to Barrington, Ill., where Lois returned to teaching english and home economics while the boys completed college.

Staman and Lois retired to Greenbank in 1980 where they were very active in the community and the Coupeville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed playing the organ, cello and piano, gardening, crafts and macramé. In 2002, they made Regency of Oak Harbor their home.

Lois is survived by her husband, Staman; by two sons and their spouses, James R. and Georgia Hook of Orange, Calif. and William G. and Sandy Hook of Seattle: by four grandchildren Andy, Elizabeth, Lindsey and Tyler Hook; and by one sister-in-law, Dorothy Reece.

Graveside urn committal will be at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville, with funeral arrangements entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Coupeville United Methodist Church with Rev. Hobart Hildyard and Rev. Dr. Mary Boyd officiating. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Coupeville Lions or the Coupeville United Methodist Church.
