Norman Arthur Heggenes: Dec. 4, 1937 – Jan. 27, 2021

Norman Arthur Heggenes, 83, of Langley, Wash., passed away peacefully Jan. 27, 2021, while surrounded by family, at his home.

Norman (Norm) was born the second of five boys in Clinton, Wash., on Whidbey Island on Dec. 4, 1937 to Leif and Ruth Heggenes. Norm’s early years were spent on the family farm in Clinton, where hard work and love of family and friends were preached by his proud Norwegian parents. His childhood was spent helping with chores, hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends. When he was old enough he would help his father on the family’s commercial fishing boat.

Norm graduated from Langley High School in 1956. He then earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and a master’s in education from Central Washington University. His first teaching job was in Sultan, Wash. Norm shortly moved back to Whidbey to teach math, science and become an assistant football coach at Langley High School. Norm pursued becoming a principal and eventually accepted a job as principal for Sequim Middle School, from which he retired after 32 years.

Norm met his wife Kathy at the Cozy Corner Tavern on Whidbey and they married in 1965. Norm and Kathy raised their three children, Christopher, Garth and Kendall mostly in Sequim, Wash. They later moved back to Whidbey to be closer to their adult children and grandchildren.

Norm was an amazing family man who cherished his children and grandchildren, Kolby, Lauren and Cade. He loved being a grandpa. He always kept his grandkids laughing and made each of them feel special.

Norm had a passion for salmon fishing and golf. He fished the waters of Puget Sound and for many years you could find him teeing it up at Dungeness golf course in Sequim.

Norm served as a social coordinator throughout his life. He planned many a golf and fishing trip for family and friends. He loved hosting BBQ salmon dinners, joining friends and his brothers for weekly breakfasts and Friday evening cocktails and providing at least one or two quiet jokes at all occasions. His kindness, compassion, humor, love of family and friends will always be cherished and will be forever missed.

Norm was preceded in death by his son Christopher and parents Ruth and Leif.

Norm is survived by his wife Kathy Heggenes; children Garth (Molly) Heggenes and Kendall Lockwood; grandchildren Kolby Heggenes and Lauren and Cade Lockwood; four brothers, Lloyd (Vivian) Heggenes, Roy (Joyce) Heggenes, Al (Mary Jane) Heggenes and Mick Heggenes; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
