15 South Whidbey athletes headed to 1A track and field meet

South Whidbey will have several quick-footed, sure-armed athletes at the state 1A championship meet this year. After the tri-district meet held in two rounds Thursday and Saturday, 15 Falcons on the track and field team will travel to Cheney for the state meet.

After the tri-district meet held in two rounds Thursday and Saturday, 15 Falcons on the track and field team will travel to Cheney for the state meet.

Hoping for a state title are senior Nick French in the javelin, senior girls 800-meter runner Jaime Rodden, senior girls long jumper Maia Sparkman and the 400-meter and 1,600-meter girls relay teams.

Several Falcons set their career-best times and marks at the tri-district meet at Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline. Senior Mackenzie Hezel set her best toss at 111 feet, 9 inches. Maia Sparkman leaped over her previous best long jump distance and placed third at 17 feet, 2 inches. She will also run in the 400-meter relay with Anna Leski, Baily Forsyth and Madi Boyd, who ran the sixth-fastest time among 1A teams this year in 50.54 seconds.

Boyd, Hezel, Sparkman and Rodden will comprise the all-senior 1,600-meter team after placing fourth in 4:09.23, within 1 second of the South Whidbey High School record and the third fastest time in school history.

Rodden ran a career-best race in the 800 in 2:18.91 for fourth place, which is also the fourth-best time in the state this year. According to Falcon head coach Mark Eager, Rodden ran the fifth-fastest time in school history and the best Falcon mark in 15 years.

On the boys team, sophomore Tanner Lobdell qualified in the 100-meter in 11.52. His time put him in fourth place at the tri-district meet. He’ll run in the 400-meter relay with French, Kale Reichersamer and Jordan Parrick after they qualified for state with a third-place time of 44.86. Lobdell will also be in the 1,600-meter relay with Reichersamer, Brandon Asay and Cole Zink because they combined for third place in 3:33.84.

Zink, a junior, ran a season-best 2:01.56 in the 800 to place fourth and qualify for the state meet.

Parrick, a senior, ran a career-best time in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.44 for fifth place.

French finished the javelin in second place at 172 feet, 3 inches.
