Three days after a dramatic win over their rivals, the Falcon baseball players couldn’t find any magic against the Lakewood Cougars on Monday, March 24.

Lakewood won 4-2 as its starting pitcher, Matt Seiber, threw all six innings for the win. South Whidbey had a couple of chances with big hits from senior Jake Sladky and Ricky Muzzy, who each recorded a double in the game. But the Falcons failed to string together their hits and were held to one run in the third inning and one run in the seventh inning.

It was a far cry from the up-and-down affair against Coupeville in the final game of the rivalry series March 21 at South Whidbey High School, which the Falcons won 10-9 on last-inning heroics.

“It was a barn burner,” said Falcon head coach Tom Fallon.

The Falcons avoided the sweep by taking a quick lead in the first inning when they scored three runs.

Coupeville made its move in the fifth inning by scoring eight runs on three hits, five walks and an error.

Leading 9-6 at the end of the sixth inning, the Wolves looked to have the series sweep in hand.

Facing defeat, the Falcons scored four runs in the final inning to win. Falcon junior Brent Piehler claimed victory on a two-out, two-RBI, game-winning single.

“I like the fight in my guys,” Fallon said. “They don’t seem to lay down and give up late in the game. That is a huge thing moving forward.”
