Even though South Whidbey girls soccer lost more matches than it won in the 1A District 1 tournament, the Falcons will play again for a shot at the state tournament.

South Whidbey lost 4-1 to Meridian on Friday and fell 2-0 to Lynden Christian on Saturday. Falcon senior Maia Sparkman scored the lone goal in the waning minutes of the loss to Meridian.

Falcon head coach Ben Rusch said his squad made mistakes early against Meridian which led to some quick goals. Once behind, South Whidbey didn’t have the roster depth to scramble for a rally.

Against Lynden Christian, Rusch said both goals were on corner kicks and credited his team’s defense for not allowing a “quality” shot on goal. South Whidbey had a couple of looks at Lynden Christian’s goal, but failed to put the ball into the net.

Losing both matches thrust the Falcons into a loser-out match against Seattle Christian on Tuesday, after The Record went to press.

Seattle Christian (15-2 overall) was quite a force in the Nisqually Conference. The Warriors have yet to be shut out of a match and lost only two matches to one of the state’s best teams, Eatonville.

The top six teams, out of 11 in the District 1/2/3 regional round, advance to the state 1A tournament. King’s already secured a berth in the state tournament by winning the District 1 tournament.
