The Falcons’ fleet feet carried the South Whidbey girls to a fourth-place finish in cross country last week, but the Falcons couldn’t outrun the flu bug.

The South Whidbey girls took fourth place in the league finals Saturday at Lakewood, coming in behind Cedarcrest, Lakewood and King’s.

The Falcon boys finished in seventh; Lakewood (44) edged Archbishop Murphy (47) for the boys title.

Falcons coach Doug Fulton said the team was hit hard by the flu. Half of the boys team, and a third of the girls, didn’t compete.

Blake Koszarek, a first-team all-conference runner a year ago as a sophomore, was sidelined and didn’t compete.

Ben Saari was the top overall finisher for South Whidbey, placing 12th and earning second-team all-conference, as did Chantal White, who placed 14th in the girls race.

Scott Warwick and Audrey Digirolamo had season-best runs, and Fulton noted that Audrey ran an amazing two minutes faster than she did on the same course on Oct. 10.

The Falcons will host the district championships this Saturday at Waterman Field.
