Falcons cruise to one-sided wins / Baseball, softball

After tough losses over the weekend, the South Whidbey High School baseball and softball teams bounced back to record lopsided, five-inning home wins Monday, March 19.

The baseball team thumped King’s 12-2 and the softball squad hammered Concrete 16-3.

Baseball

The Falcons led only 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. They then exploded for nine runs over the next two innings to pull away.

Singles by Brent Batchelor, Drew Fry and Kody Newman and walks to Dex Jokinen, Taylor Brown and Nick Young led to a five-run fourth.

In the four-run fifth, Fry, Carson Wrightson and Newman all doubled, while Alex Black added a single and Ethan Petty and Brown each walked.

Newman, Fry and Wrightson all finished with two hits; Newman added three RBI and Fry and Wrightson had two each.

The Falcons stole 10 bases in the game, led by Batchelor with three and Black, Brown and Wrightson with two each.

Batchelor picked up the win, tossing four innings of three-hit ball with six strike outs.

South Whidbey (2-1) faces Cedar Park Christian-Bothell (2-2) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Bannerwood Park.

Softball

South Whidbey got off to a great start, scoring four runs in the first inning. After Concrete (0-1) countered with three runs in the second, the Falcons doused the Lions’ hopes of a comeback with nine runs in their half of the inning.

The Falcons took advantage of eight Concrete errors and 11 walks to score 13 unearned runs.

Makenna Morley led the offense with two hits, two runs and an RBI. Bella Northrup ripped a triple and drove in three runs. Natalie Wilmoth, Melody Wilkie, Sophia Olson and Ari Marshall all singled.

Jordyn Kelley walked four times and scored four runs.

Northrup pitched the first two innings, giving up one earned run on one hit while striking out three. Wilkie tossed the final three innings, allowing no hits and fanning four.

South Whidbey (1-1) hosts Bellevue Christian (3-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 21.
