The Oak Harbor Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps attained a plethora of first-place wins at a meet it hosted Feb. 12, earning a spot in the upcoming regional meet.

Eight schools participated in the competition. NJROTC Commander Vince Quidachay said Oak Harbor took first place in most of the events, including armed drill, unarmed drill, sporter and precision marksmanship and physical fitness, as well as many individual events.

“The meet was hosted by OHHS, and it went flawlessly,” he wrote in an email to the News-Times. “The support we received from parents was amazing.”

He said at least 50 parents attended the event to serve food to the cadets, and Oak Harbor High School Principal Nate Salisbury attended to present the winners with their awards.

The next meet will take place Feb. 26 at Port Angeles High School, and the regional meet will be March 26 at Marysville High School.

Oak Harbor’s NJROTC program began in 1973 and had 217 active cadets as of the beginning of the current school year.
