LANGLEY — After winning their first game against Nathan Hale, the South Whidbey baseball team stumbled during its next two outings.
On March 13 they lost 5-3 to Interlake, then 6-4 this week to the Sultan Turks. The Falcons are now 0-1 in the Cascade Conference and 1-2 overall.
LANGLEY — There were smiles all around Tuesday as the South Whidbey fastpitch softball team overcame Friday Harbor 3-1 in their opening bid.
“After the Wolverines’ lead-off batter fired a double, [Falcon pitcher] Rebecca Stratton dug in her heels to strike out two of three batters to get us out of the first inning with no damage,” Falcon coach Chuck Burton said.
Setting a goal is one thing; meeting it is quite another.
So when the Falcon boys soccer team celebrated the season’s start by beating Friday Harbor 3-0 Saturday, they met Goal 1 — win their first game.

“Shorten the swing! Finish higher!” he shouts to his charges.
Faced with the youngest group of players in his nine years as Falcon baseball coach, Dave Guetlin took the only option open to him. He went back to basics.
“This is a year for reloading; it happens to the best teams,” Guetlin said. “We need to be sure they know the fundamentals before expanding into the finer details.”
LANGLEY — Several years ago, a South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District youth soccer team suddenly found itself without a goalie.

The 2007-08 South Whidbey boys basketball team secured their place in school history Tuesday by beating Archbishop Murphy 58-40, securing a 2A division playoff spot and celebrating the team’s first winning season since 1992.
James Schorr won the regional championship in his 160-pound weight class at the regionals in Mount Vernon Saturday.
Schorr will join teammates Aaron Mannie (152), Trapper Rawls (285), Darrin Britton (215) and Jordan Broyles (171) in Tacoma for the Mat Classic state wrestling finals on Friday.
A revitalized South Whidbey girls basketball team climbed out of the league cellar with a smashing 64-41 win over Granite Falls on Friday.
They did it with an equal measure of inspired defense and shooting accuracy.
