The Falcon baseball team ended a hard week Friday with a 9-1 loss to Lakewood after winning two previous games in the series.
But South Whidbey is still in the hunt with a 6-1 league record (6-2 overall), just behind undefeated powerhouse Granite Falls.
Both boys and girls track teams showed strength and promise Thursday in the Falcons meet with Lakewood.

The South Whidbey girls fastpitch softball team thumped Coupeville 8-0 on March 23, helped big time by pitcher Alea Robertson’s shutout on the mound. She gave up only four hits and had four strikeouts over seven innings.

But the coach doesn’t want his young players to take anything for granted.
The South Whidbey track and field team continued to dominate early this season, with the girls and boys taking first and second in a four-way league match-up Thursday.
The Falcon girls won first place with 106 points, the boys second with 75, in the meet at Kings High School against league opponents Granite Falls (23/11), Cedarcrest (28/31.7) and Kings (101/117). The Tigers finished the meet at Granite Falls 23/11, the Red Wolves 28/31.7, and the Knights 101/117.

Following their disastrous 17-0 opening loss to Ingraham, the Falcon baseball team beat Sedro-Woolley for a 1-0 victory over the same guys that knocked the Falcons out of the playoffs last May.
Some familiar faces did very well and there was a surprise or two at Waterman Field Thursday afternoon for the first track and field event of the year.
Four area schools — Archbishop Murphy, Coupeville, Oak Harbor and Lakewood — joined South Whidbey for a jamboree heralding the start of the season.

Even when they had the bases loaded and couldn’t scratch out a single RBI, it seemed the Falcons could pull it out.
When 60 prospective players showed up for soccer on the first day of spring practice, second-year Falcons Coach Joel Gerlach was pleasantly surprised.
“After 12 seniors graduated last year, I was a little concerned but this crop of players has demonstrated better skills, though as a group they’re not as big,” he said.
Last season, new Falcons girls fastpitch softball head Coach Chuck Burton had to deal with a variety of problems — new players trying to understand game fundamentals and some internal team dissension — and it resulted in a 5-15 record.
