Rhodes, Franssen lead ladies’ par-3 golf tournament

The Short and Sweet Challenge usually takes place in March but was postponed because of COVID-19.

Oak Harbor High School’s Sara Rhodes and veteran local golfer Monique Franssen led the field at the Ladies’ Short and Sweet Par-3 Challenge Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Whidbey Golf Club.

Rhodes, a junior on the Wildcat golf team, shot a 61 to post the best gross score. Franssen’s 44 was the top net result.

The Short and Sweet Challenge usually takes place in March but was postponed because of the coronavirus. The Whidbey Golf Club Ladies’ Invitational, which was originally scheduled for earlier this summer, was rescheduled for Sept. 10 and 11. When it was canceled, the club was able to replace it with the Short and Sweet Challenge, according to Whidbey Golf Club pro David Phay.

“The ladies had a great time and enjoyed perfect weather,” Phay said. “All the holes were played at 100 yards or less, so that everyone had an opportunity to get on the green in one shot.”

Mimi Bommersbach finished one stroke behind Rhodes with a gross score of 62. Pamela Smith shot 63, and Franssen and Patricia Connors carded 64s.

In net scores, Connors and Jean Congdon finished second to Franssen with 46s. Paula Oldenburg nabbed fourth with a 51, and Rhodes, Eleanor Wright and Jane Behrman shot 52s.
