Volleyball team preps for season at invite

The South Whidbey girls volleyball team traveled to Meridian High School for a series of pre-season invitational games Saturday.

“We found ourselves matched with big 4A schools,” Falcons head coach Mandy Jones said. “We definitely have some kinks to work out, and that is why practice will be three hours this week instead of two.”

Jones noted that passing was phenomenal and Melanie Murphy dominated as a libero, a fancy word for a defensive specialist who only plays in the back row and goes in for the middle hits.

“I was very proud of her for playing her position as well as she did for the first time in her volleyball career,”

Jones said.

Jones said that overall the tournament was a huge learning experience for all of them — coaches and girls alike.

“We played Squalicum, Edmonds-Woodway, Meridian and Lynnwood; big schools with serious volleyball programs,” she added. “The girls played hard and it gave Meggan [assistant coach Lubach] and myself a good idea of what needs to be improved.”

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, the girls welcome the Cedarcrest Red Wolves to Erikson Gym for the first Cascade Conference home game.
