Whidbey’s only Pony League team capped its incredible 18-6 season with a tournament title this weekend.

The Whidbey Crabs used lockdown pitching and defense to win two games in the Mountlake Terrace Youth Athletic Association Knockout Tournament. Facing three of the other top four teams in the league on their home field at South Whidbey Community Park, the Crabs mustered wins against the Mountlake Terrace Money and the Mountlake Terrace Badgers.

In the championship game, Whidbey willed itself to victory from a 2-0 deficit. The Crabs scored four runs in the fourth inning before starting pitcher Will Simms closed the complete game. Josiah Sergeant and Max Freidman each knocked two hits in the championship game.

Fighting in the single-elimination tournament, Whidbey won its first game in the second round (the Crabs had a first-round bye). Whidbey denied the Money in a 10-0 win. Connor Antich pitched the complete game and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Will Simms, Trenton Piehler, Freidman and Dylan Woodward each tallied two hits.

The Crabs, in their third season as a Pony League team, have won 72 games while losing only 16.
