Whidbey Crabs split Pony League doubleheader with Maltby squad

The Whidbey Crabs wrapped up their regular season home games Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with the Maltby Battlecats.

Whidbey won the opener 9-4 before dropping the final 8-6.

In the first game, Will Simms led the Crabs with five innings on the mound. He also led Whidbey with three triples. Austin Sterba closed out the

contest with two innings as the Crabs’ pitcher. Connor Antich added three hits, while Sterba and Trent Piehler had two hits each.

In the nightcap, Maltby jumped out to an early lead in the second inning with four runs off Maxfield Friedman. Lewis Pope relieved Friedman and closed out the second but not before Maltby scored three more runs for a 7-2 lead.

The Crabs battled back in the sixth with Antich, Sterba and Simms once again leading the three-run attack. They picked up another run in the 7th to close out the scoring.

Antich held the Maltby squad in the final three frames.

The Crabs play their final regular season game in Mountlake Terrace on Wednesday before participating in the MTYAA Knock-out Tournament the week of June 13-16.

Whidbey’s record stands at 15-6.
