Langley’s 2015 mayoral race will not include Fred McCarthy.

The mayor announced in a Monday morning email to The Record that he will not seek reelection this November. In a follow up phone call, he promised to serve out the remainder of his term but confirmed his plans to sit this race out.

“I’m just going to complete my term,” he said. “I’m feeling like I have completed the term that I was elected to.”

McCarthy was appointed to serve as interim mayor in February 2013. He filled the post left vacant by former mayor Larry Kwarsick who was forced out of office following a scandal involving his falsifying a public document.

McCarthy was elected to fill out Kwarsick’s remaining term in October 2013, which expires this year.

In McCarthy’s “Mayor’s beat” column submitted to The Record, he noted some “great memories” such as the First Street waterline replacement, Second Street redesign, supporting the Port of South Whidbey Harbor expansion, celebrating Langley’s centennial, preserving sand shrimp for visiting gray whales and pushing for economic development.

A full story about McCarthy’s decision will be in the April 15 issue of The Record.
