It’s not too late to make your own holiday wreath and get some help doing it.
Flying Bear, Langley’s year-round flower and gift store, is offering two wreath workshops this weekend from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 and Sunday, Dec. 23.
The cost is $55, which includes supplies, greenery and refreshments.
Many large nurseries have already completed their custom wreath orders and may not have many left to sell, said Flying Bear co-owner Melissa Brown.
“But we just keep on making them,” she said.
Wreath workshop participants can expect to leave with a unique wreath made from all Whidbey-grown ingredients.
“It will be cozy, creative and made just in time for Christmas,” Brown said.
Greenery and accents, such as dried eucalyptus leaves and red rose hip berries, all come tfrom he Flying Bear Farm nestled in the woods near Langley.
Brown and her husband Benjamin Courteau are flower farmers who specialize in “magical floral design services” for weddings, special events, restaurants and farmers markers.
A recent peek inside Flying Bear revealed tubs of seasonal greenery, dried botanicals, holly branches, shining red berries and a pile of bare circular wreaths made from local grapevine.
“We emphasize all natural ingredients for the wreaths so they can be put right on the compost pile when they’ve dried out,” Brown said.
A small Christmas tree perched in the storefront window is also decorated with many ornaments provided from nature. And family.
“Forest people” made of pine cones, tufted wool and other quaint touches are crafted by Brown’s mother, Molly Brown. Her father, David Brown, creates tiny winter creatures and characters from fused glass that glisten in the light.
Should you want to wrap your head in a new look for the new year, Flying Bear is offering another do-it-yourself class from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 30. Called a “Flower Crown Workshop,” Brown advertises it as a festive and flora way to “deck yourself or a loved one out” for a New Year’s party. Space is limited to six people for the workshops.
