    Thief hits more Freeland shops

    FREELAND — Several more Freeland businesses were hit by an overnight thief last week, and the burglar made off with beer, cash and candy.

    But one business owner on Main Street was able to get video footage of the thief, and has turned over the tape to Island County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

    FREELAND — A thief broke into Island Tea Company in Freeland sometime between noon on Sunday and 9 a.m. on Monday, walking away with more than $500.

    An employee of the Main Street business arrived Monday morning and could see before she got inside that something was wrong.

    COUPEVILLE — Freeland incorporation proponents left an Island County Council of Governments meeting Wednesday morning with smiles on their faces.

    The reason? The Island County Council of Governments have expressed initial support for partial funding of Freeland’s new sewer system with the county’s rural sales tax.

    The highway from the Clinton ferry terminal to Bob Galbreath Road is set to receive a fresh coat of asphalt, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday.

    FREELAND — A suspicious fire destroyed a portable restroom at Freeland Park sometime Sunday night.

    Nearly four miles away at Double Bluff, Island County Sheriff’s Office deputies later discovered an attempted torching of the new bathroom facilities at the park.

    A local singer is starting a benefit for organizers of the Whidbey Island Highland Games, who lost their inventory in a fire last year.

    On May 30, 2007, fire ripped through Angus and Maureen MacDonald’s business warehouse, destroying all of their Highland Games inventory. The fire was part of an unsolved string of suspicious fires that happened over nearly a month throughout the South End.

    Shipyard looks to rebound by April

    FREELAND — Nichols Brothers Boat Builders Inc. expects to rehire more than a 100 employees by mid-April in the face of a full work load of construction projects.

    “By the end of March, we’re going to be up to 100 folks. By the middle to end of April, we’ll go up to 130 to 140, somewhere in there,” Nichols CEO Len York said Thursday as the shipyard launched its latest project, extensive repairs to a custom fishing boat.
