Justice system needs reform | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

Justice might be blind but it seems that money does tip her scales. If we take a look at the 2.3 million people incarcerated in America, how many would you suppose are wealthy?  Rich and famous people seem to be able to escape the full measure of justice when poor people cannot. Money buys the quality of one’s representation.

Poor people — the ones who end up in prison — can’t afford to have their cases presented well. The indigent must depend on the public defender who is often overworked and underpaid. They don’t have the financial clout to fight. They cannot afford to create solutions to the social problems they have to endure.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have representation in Olympia and in Washington, D.C. that would implement a justice system based on reason and logic with equal justice for all? We need reform. We need a real change to our criminal justice system — a change that puts real people ahead of politics, rhetoric and wealth.
