The city of Langley is hoping to build a pedestrian tram that would go up and down the city’s property on the bluff near the Langley marina.

Langley officials recently submitted a grant application to the Island County Subregional Regional Transportation Planning Organization for $400,000 to pay for the project. The tram is expected to cost $462,428, and city officials have said other public funding will be pursued to complete the financing for the funicular.

The pedestrian tram would be electrically powered and have a four-person capacity. It would connect the Wharf Street and marina area to Cascade Avenue. City officials said the project would provide a needed link between the waterfront and off-site parking, and would improve safety and enhance pedestrian and traffic access near the marina.
