LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Bailey’s store story stoked childhood memories

Editor, Your Wednesday article about the new owner of Bailey’s Corner Store interested me. It brought back old childhood memories. I was born in 1935 in a small house in the woods behind the store. I grew up in the 1940s about a half mile down the road on what is now part of the Hammons Reserve. Bailey’s store was the favorite (and only) watering hole for us neighborhood kids.

Editor,

Your Wednesday article about the new owner of Bailey’s Corner Store interested me. It brought back old childhood memories.

I was born in 1935 in a small house in the woods behind the store. I grew up in the 1940s about a half mile down the road on what is now part of the Hammons Reserve. Bailey’s store was the favorite (and only) watering hole for us neighborhood kids. The store was run by Ray Bailey and I assume was the store’s original owner. I believe the store was once the Ingleside school. I have seen pictures of my dad and his classmates there in the early 1900s. I’m sure a local historian could verify if this is true or not. This timeline would put the original building to be at least 100 years old.
