LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Commissioners shut down opponents

To the editor:

You cannot imagine how upset I was to see Brian Kelly’s article in the South Whidbey Record regarding Angie Homola. I have known Angie for two years and find her to be a very competent person with much integrity.

I was so appalled by Mr. Kelly’s article I had to speak up. I did not know how low her opponents would sink to win. Unfortunately, Mr. Kelly told one side of the story and in doing so created the poorest excuse for journalism I’ve ever seen.

The reality of the situation is that Homola disagreed with the policy and judgments of the county and much like Bob McCaughan who was fired when he disagreed and much like when Paula Spina was canned for speaking out, Homola’s employers systematically created a work environment where she was destined for failure.

In most environments this would be considered slander. The people who wrote the items quoted are the people who seem to think once they have power they can use it in any way they chose.

Based on my experience, this is the type of response candidates who cannot run on their record resort to in an effort to deceive voters.

I have recently found out that this type of attack was used by Mr. McDowell against his last opponent successfully. If this is to be a government by the people and for the people, we cannot condone such actions.

Mr. Kelly could do justice to those few who have had the moxie to stand up against a tyrannical government. He could have written his article about how our commissioners have consistently shut down people who disagree with them.

He could have written about how the culture of Island County government appears to support special interest. Anyone who stands in their way is to be eliminated.

Unfortunately, on South Whidbey it appears we have a newspaper that would rather publish dirt than give its citizen’s unbiased information.

Even in Chicago where I lived for more than 50 years, such tactics are not condoned.

I have not been involved with Angie’s campaign up to now.
