To the editor:

I was gratified to know that the columnist of the “Nearly Retired” has retired but not withdrawn from the life of South Whidbey community. Over the last 20 years she has been like a divining rod, tapping into the deeper layers of our experiences. Her apparently simple stories had frequently evoked thoughts and feelings in me that invited me to take a closer look at myself.

Betsy Roberts’ letter to the editor, in the July 5, South Whidbey Record, touched a vulnerable topic, viz. legalizing gay marriages. With great sensitivity she tapped into, I believe, the depth of compassion which resides in the heart of everyone.

Yes, there is hope for a kinder world.
