LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Get the facts first next time

To the editor:

Judith Lamontagne’s recent letter presents a litany of incorrect statements. However, one of the points she makes is so patently wrong that it actually could result in someone not seeking the medical care they need.

Ms. Lamontagne states “I have often wondered why teens can get free condoms but no one offers free Pap smears or mammograms or any other known medical preventatives.”

I would like to correct this inaccurate statement: The facts are that on Whidbey Island, the “Take Charge Program” and the “Breast and Cervical Health Program” both pay for PAP tests, and the Breast and Cervical Health Program. In addition, the Soroptomist International of Oak Harbor service organization helps pay for mammograms.

People should call Planned Parenthood and get the facts on these and other services rather than take the word of someone who wants to spread misinformation and attempt to unravel all the good work Planned Parenthood does for the residents of Whidbey Island.
