Editor,

Island Beach Access has set as its goal the identification and preservation of public beach access here on Whidbey Island. What is becoming increasingly clear is the distinction between public beach access and public beach accessibility.

There are many mobility-challenged citizens on our island, including those in wheelchairs, cane or walker users, the elderly and children in strollers to name some. These members of our community are unable to take advantage of our beautiful beaches. Mobility-challenged visitors are much less likely to stay overnight, go to restaurants, or shop if they cannot access our beaches. From both a moral and economic perspective, efforts to improve public beach accessibility will make our island a better place. This issue should be part of any assessment of public beach access points, now and in the future.

This is a challenging problem, and Island Beach Access is looking for solutions. We invite your participation.
