LETTER TO THE EDITOR | If it’s not broke, don’t fix it

Array

To the editor:

It is my understanding that the decision to move our beloved “Welcome to Whidbey” sign to Campbell Road has to do with the Department of Transporation’s desire to have uniform signage indicating what state route one is on.

Well, why not put this state sign at the Campbell Road location? That way motorists will be clearly informed that they are on scenic route 525; we won’t have to worry about vandalism because there’s little incentive to take trophies from a standard metal sign; the installment of the concrete supports at Campbell Road will not have been for nothing, and Whidbey Island residents and tourists will be extremely happy that they get to keep their wonderful Weldome to Whidbey sign right where it is.

This sign should continue to be the very first thing that people see when they come to the island: It announces to all that this is a very special place indeed.

Why would we ever want to lose such a treasure? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I have talked to many people about this situation, and absolutely no one wants to have our sign moved.

Why can’t the will of the people be respected? Why risk destroying this important cultural icon by trying to move it?
