Letter: Troubled by social media photo of happy firefighters

Editor,

I am deeply disturbed and disgusted by the smiling faces of firefighters at a recent house fire here on South Whidbey. My friend showed me photographs from Facebook of all the happy, smiling and looks-like-they’re-having-fun firefighters. They were sitting in lawn chairs eating food and joking.

Somebody’s house just burned down. A family just lost all their belongings, a place they can feel safe, a home. All the memories that were made there are now burned to ashes. The memories they get to keep are firefighters smiling and having a good time while they are losing everything.

Why would they even post that? I mean, really? It’s arrogance and a lack of regard to peoples feelings and self worth.

What happened to the good firefighters of South Whidbey, people like Ken who used to help my neighbor before he passed. The good folks from the pancake breakfast every year?

I know one day my husband or I will have to call upon them for help, and now I am afraid we will just be there for their amusement.
