Editor,

With just a few days to go until ballots are due, it’s worth reviewing a few key points regarding the initiative to transfer ownership of Island County Fairground to the Port of South Whidbey.

1. The transfer comes with dedicated funding to maintain and operate the fairgrounds.

2. The Port has run the Fairgrounds since April 2015, and in that time grossed over $80,000 in revenue.

3. This is an informed initiative, backed by two studies in 2015 that assessed its viability and the future of the Fairgrounds.

4. The Port supports but does NOT run the annual fair, which is put on by the Island County Fair Association.

5. The Port’s mission includes “respecting the unique rural character and environment of South Whidbey Island.”

That last point, which differentiates the Port from the current fairground owner, Island County, is an important consideration for the electorate.
