“The South Whidbey School District’s annual Youth in Arts Celebration is under way, starting with visual art on display in stores and businesses all over Langley.Coordinator Jean Shaw and other organizers have placed art work in shop windows, on outside walls and inside various Langley establishments, including the Langley Post Office, creating a community-wide art gallery that exhibits the creative art work of its young people.For the performing arts, the venue is the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, which is hosting an evening of performances each night from Tuesday through Friday and all day Saturday. A student performance at a district-wide volunteer recognition evening on May 2 kicks off the celebration, and on Wednesday, May 3, the stars are the strings: The Island Chamber Orchestra (TICO) will perform the first movement of the Bach Double Violin concerto with 15-year-old Devin Matthews-Jensen soloing. TICO consists of both adult and young musicians who rehearse weekly, coached by Talia Marcus, violinist. The Island Strings Pre-Twinkle, Twinkle and Orchestra Prep classes will play, and the Waldorf School choirs and orchestra will be conducted by Jana McFee.,Nancy Godsey will solo on violin, as will student Sabrina Canton, and Barbara Dunn will perform with her daughters Ahna Rose and Emily. During intermission, a group of fiddlers will play in the lobby while concessions will sell treats in a benefit for the Music Scholarship Fund. The IAC will also present its music scholarship awards that evening.The week continues on Thursday with a solo and ensemble recital presented by the students of Langley Middle School, and on Friday, May 5, the audience will be entertained by an International Potpourri of Irish song, dance and piano.All the evening performances are at 7 p.m. at WICA. On Saturday, May 6, the young people will perform during the day, from 10-2, right after Jim Freeman again leads the World’s Shortest Parade from Langley to WICA, where there will be performances by Whidbey Children’s Theatre, South Whidbey Primary School and South Whidbey Intermediate School. All events are free during this week celebrating youth in arts. The following days in May will feature other performances and displays at various venues, including the South Whidbey High School auditorium, The Greenbank Farm and Bayview Gallery.
