Drivers are advised to be aware that several roads west of Coupeville will see construction crews working to complete pavement preservation projects this week.

Sherman Road from State Highway 20 to Cemetery Road, Black Road from Sherman Road to Broadway Street and Madrona Way from town limits to Good Lane will undergo asphalt paving between July 18 and 22.

A distributor truck will spray hot liquid asphalt on one lane of the road, creating a surface that the next layer of asphalt will stick to. Then, a paving machine will apply the hot layer of asphalt to the tacky surface before steel drum rollers compact the asphalt material.

Additionally, crews will begin chip seal application on Smuggler’s Cove Road in South Whidbey on July 21.

Expected to continue for up to two weeks, the process includes applying an oil layer followed by a gravel layer, or ‘chip,’ to the road before rollers orient the rock onto the oil.

Drivers will see crews working from Scurlock Road to the entrance of South Whidbey State Park, and from Lagoon Point Road to State Highway 525.
