A body discovered on the shore of Mutiny Bay near Old Beach Road has been identified as a 97-year-old Everett man.

Police said the body is the one that was sighted last Thursday in the water near the ferry terminal in Mukilteo and led to the shutdown of the Clinton-Mukilteo ferry route.

A person walking along the beach discovered the body just after 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 and called police.

Foul play is not suspected.

“The cause of death was drowning and the manner of death is going to be suicide,” said Det. Ed Wallace of the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim’s family has been notified, he said.

Ferry service between Clinton and Mukilteo was halted on Nov. 19 after people at the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal reported a body floating in the water near the end of the ferry dock.

The report led to an intensive search by the Coast Guard, which included the Cutter Terrapin, an 87-foot patrol boat from Bellingham, and an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Port Angeles. Personnel from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and Tulalip Tribal Police also helped search the waters of Possession Sound, and the search was called off after roughly two hours.
