A burn ban throughout Island County will go into effect at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8.

Sheriff Mark Brown announced the upcoming prohibition on outdoor blazes on Thursday. Brown said reduced moisture levels, low humidity and warmer weather — combined with the reduced availability of fire-fighting resources — have caused a risk of fire.

No natural debris can be burned, even burns that have a previously approved permit.

The ban does not include cooking fires in barbecues and outdoor recreational cooking fires contained within established fire pits; those lined with metal or concrete. The use of self-contained camp stoves will also still be allowed.
