Campgrounds no place for disc golf, South Whidbey parks commissioners agree

Those hoping for a disc golf course at South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District’s future campground will likely be disappointed.

Those hoping for a disc golf course at South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District’s future campground will likely be disappointed.

Parks Commissioners Mark Helpenstell, Dennis Hunter, Matt Simms and Bob Hezel agreed a flying disc golf course would be “incompatible” with the planned development of the 35-acre property acquired in October at the district’s regular monthly meeting on March 16. Though they don’t envision a place for it at the campground, Helpenstell and Simms were in favor of looking at alternative locations for a course due to public demand for the game.

Parks Director Doug Coutts said when the district released a campground development survey to gauge the public, it was inundated with requests for a disc golf course. Coutts said 74 people expressed interest, though the results may have been skewed after a Coupeville man, who is president of a disc golf club on North Whidbey, shared the survey on the group’s Facebook page, Coutts said.

Simms, communicating via conference call, touted potential safety concerns the game could present on the future site. He suggested the district consider other locations for the course, such as forested areas where foot traffic wouldn’t be an issue.

“I’m still in favor, I just don’t think it’s compatible with this other development here,” Helpenstell said.

Coutts said the pursuit of a disc golf course could be something the district adds to its comprehensive plan programs in the future.
