The Clinton Community Council will discuss a study of the area’s market capacity, contracted by the Port of South Whidbey, at the district’s upcoming meeting Monday, Jan. 25.

The port district hired a consulting firm to conduct a study of Clinton’s market. Already the port received an update on the survey and focus group results which showed people do a lot of shopping off island for specific goods and services.

Clinton has sought to form an identity for its commercial hub near the ferry terminal, and the community council took up that charge as a way of providing a unified voice to county and state agencies. As an unincorporated area, the county regulates much of Clinton’s development and growth, with the state controlling the highway and ferry, both of which figure to be key in any kind of changes for the area. One of the major ideas of improving economic gains in the area is to slow traffic and create “placemaking” features (a planning approach to designing public spaces), such as medians and roundabouts.

The council will also discuss candidates to fill vacancies.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Clinton Community Hall. Questions about the meeting can be sent to Jack Lynch at jackl@clintonwa.com.
