Community dance will celebrate Dia de los Muertos

“Violinist Talia Marcus will lead the Island Contra Band at the special Dia de las Muertos community event on Saturday at Bayview Hall.The Island Contra Band and Bahia join for a community fund-raising dance celebrating Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) on Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m. at Bayview Hall. Proceeds will benefit maintenance and improvement projects at the 73-year-old community hall.Talia Marcus hosts the Contra Band, having just returned from working inMaui after a summer in St. Petersburg, Russia and the Rocky Mountains.Talia and the Band will kick up the dust with tunes like The Salty DogRag and Whiskey Before Breakfast with guest caller Sherry Nevins.The Contra Band will alternate with Latin jazz played by Bahia, giving dancers the chance to take part in two dancing and music styles. Those attending are encouraged to honor people who have died by placing photos on a special table. Candles will be provided. Costumes are welcome. Jerry Wennstrom will bring a mystery guest, and there will be a video of the festival as it has been held in Mexico for centuries. Tickets are $10. The 73-year-old hall will benefit directly from ticket sales at the CyberC@fe, Joe’s Island Music and 1504 Coffee Bar.
