“During his first term in the Legislature, Langley Republican Rep. Kelly Barlean has made some friends in the environmental community.The Washington Conservation Voters, a statewide, non-partisan, non-profit environmental organization, ranked the 10th District’s Barlean as the top environmental legislator among Republicans in their annual environmental scorecard released this week.The scorecard ranks lawmakers according to their votes on issues relating to clean water, clean air, sprawl and traffic congestion. Barlean received a score of 91 percent and was praised for his efforts in pipeline safety, reducing pesticides around schools, promoting electric vehicles and promoting salmon recovery. Barlean also sponsored legislation to protect 600 acres around South Whidbey’s Goss Lake from logging by the Department of Natural Resources. Last year he successfully fought to stop the proposed sale for development of the Whidbey Island Game Farm in Central Whidbey. The 175-acre site was eventually purchased by the non-profit Au Sable Institute for Environmental Studies.Washington Conservation Voters endorses and supports what they call environmentally responsible candidates for public office. This year they have endorsed more Republicans than ever before.On the scorecard Barlean racked up a higher percentage of environmental votes than fellow 10th District House member Dave Anderson, D-Clinton. Anderson received an 82 percent rating. In the state Senate, Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen was given a 91 percent score.So far, no one has stepped forward to challenge Barlean for his 10th District seat in November.”
