Deadline for comp plan extended by Langley City Council

The Langley City Council pushed back its deadline for the completion of the comprehensive plan to July 31 at its regular monthly meeting Monday. Originally set for June 30, the deadline was moved to the end of July due to a pair of lengthy workshops that curbed progress.

The workshops, held May 9 and 12, were open to the public and were intended to cover land use and utilities. The lengthy discussions that ensued slowed progress.

Planning Director Brigid Reynolds reported that the city is only two-thirds of the way through the land use discussion. The deadline may be pushed back even further if the council finds itself in a similar predicament, one councilwoman said.

“Based on our last meeting, it may be a little longer,” Councilwoman Dominque Emerson said.

Future workshops, held May 19, 23, 26 and June 2 from 3:30-6 p.m. at city hall will cover parks and open space, transportation, sustainability and housing, capital facilities and economic development.

While progress appears slow, the council approved a resolution of substantial completion to the state.

“We believe we’ve made substantial completion on it,” Mayor Tim Callison said. “We will continue. Small cities have been granted up to a two-year extension, but we don’t want to take that long.”

“I’m very happy to be doing it. It’s a milestone for us as well to be that far along finally,” he added.

In an effort to continue public participation but in a efficient manner, an opportunity for comments will come at the end of the session.
