Easter services and celebrations

South Whidbey celebrates Easter and the season of spring.

“An Easter Vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland, jointly sponsored by St. Augustine’s Episcopal, Langley United Methodist, St. Peter’s Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran.. Based on the ancient Eve of Easter Worship of the early church, the service will include the outdoor lighting of the new fire, candle-lighting, reading of scripture and songs, a renewal of baptism commitment, the first Easter hymn and the first Easter Lord’s Supper. Participants are invited to bring bells to ring during the singing. A Sunrise Service will be held at 7 a.m. on Easter morning, followed by a festive Easter celebration at 9 and 11 a.m. The church will have an Easter breakfast from 8-10:30 a.m. and an Easter egg hunt at 10:15.On Holy Saturday at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley, an easter Vigil Mass begins at 9 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Easter Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.A 9 a.m. service on Easter morning at Langley United Methodist Church begins in the darkness of the tomb, when the church children will help recollect the events of the preceding week. Then, the opening of the tomb will be dramatically recreated as the light is let in and songs of Alleluia celebrate the glory of Easter.The second service, at the special time of 10:30 a.m., will follow the more familiar practice of beginning in song in the full light of the new morning. The children’s time will feature the story of the resurrection. Special choir numbers are planned for both services.Easter shines at Unity of Whidbey with an intergenerational service at 10 a.m., when spiritual leader Mary Knight-Burdsal will present, Rise and Shine! a message about rising out of our self-imposed limitations and into the light of who we are as spiritual beings. The service will include a story and songs for children of all ages, as well as a time for meditation. special music will be provided by the Unity Quartet, directed by Heidi Hoelting. The service takes place at Bayview Community Hall. Childcare for ages 2-5 is provided.St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Clinton will hold a Sunrise Service at 8 a.m. followed by a breakfast social from 9-10 a.m. and an Easter egg hunt video at 9:15. The Flowering of the Cross worship service with Holy Communion and Sunday School takes place at 10:30 a.m.Easter Sunday services at Langley C&MA church begin with e a Sunrise Service at the Langley Nichols Boat Dock at 7 a.m. (parking at the church with shuttle service to the dock). At 10:30 a.m., teens and adults are invited to a Celebration Service, and a Children’s Celebration will take place with Gene Cordova. Nursery is provided, and a continental breakfast follows the service.At St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland, Easter will be celebrated at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. with a Choral Eucharist. A festive brunch takes place at 9 a.m. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island celebrates on Sunday, April 23, with the service, Lo, the Earth Awakes Again. Harpist Laurie Riley will be featured, along with an original children’s play, poetry of ee cummings, Frost and Whitman and a reader’s theater excerpt from The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame.The service is at 4 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.South Whidbey Assembly of God invites will hold an Easter Celebration at 10 a.m., featuring special music and the message, When Heaven Rejoiced. Nursery and children’s church take place during the service.At House of Prayer in Clinton, a 9:30 a.m. coffee hour on Easter morning will be followed by worship service at 10:30 a.m.. Childcare is provided for children under 3.Resurrection Sunday services at First Baptist Church of South Whidbey will be held in the morning at 11, with an evening service at 6 p.m. The church is located on Newman Road in Freeland.The Whidbey Institute will host a festive celebration of spring and the renewal of life on April 23, 10 a.m. at Thomas Berry Hall. The service will including communion (Eucharist) and be followed by a potluck brunch at 11 a.m. There’s an egg toss at noon, and other games in the field. Everyone is invited.”
