“The Whidbey Chapter of Disabled American Veterans is sponsoring a Veterans Health and Assistance Fair Saturday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doctors from the Veterans Hospital in Seattle and local community service organizations will come together to assist community Vets.The purpose of the fair is to let veterans know there is someplace they can go, said Whidbey Disabled American Veterans member Dan Bowers.Organizers are hoping that by making services available, veterans will see that there are people and groups in the community who care about them and want to help.We want to get vets in contact with local organizations on the island that can give them help, be it temporary housing, clothing, food, assistance finding a job or anything else, Bowers said.There will be a full range of services available to participants. Medical examinations will be given by doctors and veterans can get a free general health check-up and physical.In addition to medical services, clothing items have been donated and food will be offered. Representatives from local service organizations will be on hand to help veterans fill out paperwork for Veterans Administration claims for disability, compensation and other benefits many vets may not know is available to them.
