Final Cove Concert features Shifty Sailors

The Shifty Sailors energized the afternoon audience at the Island County Fair on Sunday. They'll perform again this Sunday in Coupeville.

I’m just ‘the wife,’ but I was there in the booth, too, Lila added.Joan Soltys/staff photoThe music of Whidbey’s own Shifty Sailors and the Skagit Community Band will complete the Concerts on the Cove’s five-week summer series this Sunday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Coupeville Town Park.Concert-goers can enjoy the music and help stock the shelves of Whidbey’s Help House. The $5 admission fee will be reduced by $1 with a donation of one can of food and $2 with two cans. Children under 12 are admitted free. Season ticket holders are also encouraged to bring food. Completing their summer engagements on Whidbey Island, the Shifty Sailors will be performing selections from both their first CD, Heave Ho, My Lads and their upcoming CD due out in November, Haul On . . .Skagit Community Band, under the direction of Vince Fejeran, returns for the second year in a row performing old favorites, a medley of Irving Berlin tunes, and several marches including the concert’s finale, Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.Concerts on the Cove’s fall season begins at Coupeville High School’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. with the music of Mad Pudding. Along with Concerts on the Cove, Soroptimist International of Coupeville is sponsoring the fund-raiser to pay for the new Whidbey General Hospital gowns.Vern Olsen, president of Concerts on the Cove, says Mad Pudding is one of the liveliest and most versatile young bands coming out of Canada. This will be a great kickoff for the 2000/2001 season in the Performing Arts Center, Olsen said. “
