“Fastpitch team falls to MarinerSouth Whidbey fell victim to Mariner in the Falcons’ second fastpitch game of the season Monday afternoon.The visitors from the island lost 10-0. It was a real discouraging game, said coach Renee Christian, recounting a series of errors that gave away a lot of runs. The coach was hoping for better after the team played well in losing their debut 3-0.There were some positive things, however. Freshman pitcher Ashley Lopez fanned seven batters, and the Falcons started to hit the ball hard — but right at the defense. The kids are starting to make contact, Christian said. Mariner won its third consecutive game to start the season.South Whidbey’s league opener was Tuesday night at Granite Falls. Thursday the Falcons host Lynden Christian, expected to be one of the top teams in the North Cascades League.Baseball team loses to EverettThe Falcon baseball team’s record fell to 1-2 on the new season Monday as the visiting Everett Seagulls beat them 10-3.South Whidbey scored first but then watched as Everett scored five in the second and two in the third to put the game away. Seagull Tyler Lucken led his team’s 10-hit attack and drove across the final two runs with a homer in the sixth.Kevin Arndt and Jessie Sitton collected doubles for the Falcons, who totalled 6 hits and 3 errors for the game. Losing pitcher was Falcon starter Alex Boisvert. Everett improved to 2-0.The Falcons travel to Granite Falls this afternoon for their league opener, then host Granite Friday.”
