The South Whidbey girls’ tennis team dominated the sub district tournament May 16 at the indoor club at Semi-ah-moo Resort in Blaine.

For the first place spot, two of South Whidbey’s singles players battled for first place with Janelle Iverson defeating her teammate, Sonya Morphew, 6-4, 6-1 to capture the Class 2A Northwest District singles championship.

In the consolation round, for second place Morphew was defeated by Lakewood’s Charlee Haugen, 6-1, 6-0.

Again in doubles, two of South Whidbey’s pairs battled for the championship, Jenny Newman and Amy Vogt beat teammates Catie Newman and Chelsea Miller. 6-2, 6-0. Newman and Miller rebounded to win the consolation final, 7-6, 6-3.

Coach Tom Kramer said, “When teammates play one another, it makes coaching very easy.”

The top two singles players and doubles teams advance to the 2A tri-district meet next Friday and Saturday in Federal Way.

Kramer said the girls played well.

“We were good enough for sub district, but we have to improve for district play this weekend. We have a few weaknesses we need to work on this week.”

Three weeks ago Kramer said he had his doubts about whether “we would be ready for sub district, but they came out and played hard.”

Sixteen teams competed in sub district, eight will go to district and three to state.

“With each step up the competition intensifies. We are a very young team with two freshmen and no seniors. Only Jenny (Newman) has had district or state experience,” Kramer said.

The state tournament is May 30 and 31 in Yakima.
