South Whidbey enjoyed what fastpitch coach Rene Christian called sweet revenge against Mariner on Monday afternoon.

“South Whidbey enjoyed what fastpitch coach Rene Christian called sweet revenge against Mariner on Monday afternoon. In 2000 and 1999, Mariner beat South Whidbey by the 10 run rule both times. But the story was different Monday as the host Falcons produced an impressive 5-3 victory.Sophomore hurler Ashley Lopez went the distance. She was solid all the way, said Christian. Lopez gave up only two hits and walked only two batters. She is now 2-0 on the young season.South Whidbey took advantage of a Keasha Campbell triple to score one run, but it was mostly a small ball victory. The Mariner pitcher loaded the bases on walks in the third inning which the Falcons turned into two runs, one coming on an error and another on a nice bunt by Bronwyn Russell.Last week the Falcons played only one game due to the wet weather, losing 4-0 Tuesday to Meadowdale. Sophomore starter Val Mock struggled early but the Meadowdale pitcher totally shut down the Falcon offense with the exception of one single.South Whidbey won two of its three non-league games. This week they begin a grueling start to their North Cascades Conference schedule. Yesterday they played Granite Falls, Thursday they travel to Lynden Christian, Saturday they host Lynnwood (non-league), and next Monday they host Nooksack Valley, last year’s undefeated league champion. “
