Perkins 53.3 If they are saving the best for last, South Whidbey’s runners, jumpers and throwers are going to be unbelievable at the May 26-27 state meet in Cheney.Over two meets last week, more than a dozen athletes leapt far ahead of where they might have been expected to be this early in the season. Three relay teams — the boys 4×400, the girls 4×100, and girls 4×200 — hit the times they will need to make it to the biggest meet of the year, while several individuals took big steps of their own. In the process, the spring-break depleted Falcons handily won a North Cascades Conference quadrangular on both the boys and girls sides Thursday, than stormed onto Eisenhower High School’s track to snag eight event wins against some of the best track and field teams in the state.Coming up with perhaps the biggest coup of the week were Dail Bates, Andrea McGillen, Kenady Reuland, and Melissa Poolman. The four girls made big time cuts in their 4×100 and 4×200 relay runs in high winds at Saturday’s Holder Relays, cutting 0.8 seconds off the shorter race and more than a second off the longer. This is the second year this particular team has run as a unit and, according to track coach Doug Fulton, the girls may run even faster under better conditions.Also putting runners around the state on notice was the boys 4×400 team. Running a 3:32 in the event Thursday, Brett Perkins, Andy Wills, Brandon Bilyeu, and Braden Giswold ranked themselves among the state’s top-three teams.Other strong performances at the Holder Relays came from Wills — who set a freshman meet record in the 400 — Caitlin Robinson in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Andrea McGillen in the long and triple jumps, and Jessie Enell in the 3,200. Enell managed a 12:44 personal record time in the event, even though she had to run into the wind for more than half the race. The effort impressed her coach. And it’s more remarkable because she was running into that wind, Fulton said.The Falcons run next on April 13 in a triangular meet at Stanwood. “
