“Riding a season-opening win over Cascade last week, the South Whidbey High School boys soccer team added two big wins and one mystifying loss to their record during the past seven days to get off to one of its best starts ever. Buoying the team was a 4-0 win against Sultan Wednesday, then a 2-0 triumph against 4A Mariner Monday. But in between, there was a 1-0 loss to North Cascades opponent Nooksack Friday — a stumble the team’s coach, Mark Helpenstell, hopes won’t happen again this season.We just couldn’t play our game, Helpenstell said.On Monday night, the Falcons did get to play their game at Mariner, putting the Marauders away on their home Astroturf. Scoring for the Falcons were junior George Supang on an assist from brother Joseph, and senior Topi Manu. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Mike Johnson turned away several Marauder shots to earn his third shutout of the year.The guys played nice ball last night, Helpenstell said.On Wednesday, the Falcons had perhaps their most satisfying game of the week, avenging a 3-2 loss to Sultan last season with a convincing 4-0 win on home turf at Waterman Field.With a bigger midfield than last year and a trimmed-down defense, the Falcons rattled Sultan’s defenders and goalkeeper. Senior Lane Richards was the team’s instrument of offensive destruction in the opening period, tagging the Turks for two goals on the strength of assists from Aaron McCabe and Joseph Supang.Helpenstell said it was a breakthrough performance for Richards.It’s as hot as I’ve seen him play, he said.In the second half, other scorers got their shots at the net. Senior Joseph Supang could have easily matched Richards’ first-half scoring production when he got loose in front of the goal twice in later period. Instead, he involved his teammates. Breaking clear from the defense early in the half, Supang faced down the Turk goalkeeper one-on-one before passing the ball across the field to Topi Manu, who had only to tap the ball into acres of open net for the score.Helpenstell said he was pleased to see teamwork come into play on the goal, even though it was not necessary.He probably would’ve made that shot, he said of Supang.Later in the half, Supang broke away again, scoring a solo goal to take the Falcons to 4-0.Helpenstell also credited Blake Skouras and Estevan Munoz-Howard for coming up with great offensive play.In junior varsity action, the Falcons downed Mariner on the heels of a 6-0 win over Nooksack Friday night. The team lost a 3-1 contest to Snohomish Wednesday.The Falcons play at home Wednesday against Lynden Christian. That game starts at 6 p.m.”
