Every year, in one way or another, the Falcons remind the big school athletes that South Whidbey is a track and field hotbed.That reminder came in jolting fashion in the girls meet. Protecting a small lead over Oak Harbor in the team competition, the girl Falcons found themselves in a losing dilemma entering the day’s final event, the 4×400 relay. Regular team member Samantha Watson was ill and absent from the meet and, said Falcon coach Doug Fulton, three likely alternates had left the meet early. Needing at least a sixth-place finish in the event, the relay team turned to sophomore distance runner Kirsten Smethurst, who had long finished her last event and changed into street clothes.Smethurst changed back into her track uniform and jumped into the relay to boost the team to a fifth place finish, giving the Falcons a one-and-a-half-point victory over Oak Harbor. That nailbiter was the only way the Falcons could have added any more excitement to the meet. As meet records fell to athletes from a number of teams, local athletes toppled plenty of marks. Although he runner up to Oak Harbor’s Scott Sebens in the 1,600 and 800 meter runs, junior Braden Giswold ran fast enough to rub out an 18-year-old school record in the mile. His 4:23.7 was a hair faster than Matt Roe’s 4:24 in 1982, and was also faster than the previous meet record. Also, in the girls 4×100 relay, the team of Dail Bates, Melissa Poolman, Lindsay Binford, and Andrea McGillen set a season-best mark of 51.36 in a winning effort, coming within 0.2 seconds of the meet record.More unwanted excitement came in the boys 4 x 400 race when officials at the start line failed to notice freshman Falcon Andy Wills trying to start out of the blocks. The race started before Wills was set, putting the team at a 25-meter disadvantage from the get-go. The team rallied, nonetheless, racing to second place behind an Oak Harbor team.Also coming up with strong performances were Lindsay Binford and Dail Bates in the 100 and 200, Karen Schwager in the 1,600, Brandon Bilyeu in the 1,600, and Brett Perkins, who not only ran a season-best in the 800, but leaped to third place in the long jump.The boys took fourth in the team competition, behind winner Marysville-Pilchuck.Boys, girls win in BlaineOn Thursday, the Falcons won the boys and girls side of a North Cascades Conference quadrangular in Blaine, downing the home team, Nooksack Valley, and Lakewood. Brett Perkins won the 200 dash in 23.66 seconds and Braden Giswold won the 3,200, posting the fastest time in the NCC this year at 9:40.5. The boys also picked up big points by winning the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.Winners for the girls team were Andrea McGillen in the long and triple jumps, Dail Bates in the 100 and 200 dashes, and the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.The Falcons compete next at next weekend’s Shoreline Invitational (boys) and Lake Washington Invitational (girls).”
