“South Whidbey built up a big lead and then hung on for a 32-26 win over Granite Falls in the season-opening football game Friday night at Waterman Field.Sophomore Jeremy Iversen got the start at quarterback, although he shared the signal calling duties with fellow soph Bryan Wenker. The first score of the year 2000 went to Justin Shelton on a 30-yard dash to the goal line. Iversen made it 12-0 with a nice run of his own, then Shelton ended the big half with a 40-yard TD run.South Whidbey scored two more touchdowns in the second half, but the tiring squad gave up 26 points to the Tigers. The visitors’ last score came with 1:13 to play, but the Falcons recovered the ensuing onside kick to assure the victory.Nick Helland had a big night on offense and defense and won the annual Wally Lehman Award for being the outstanding player in the home opener. In accepting the plaque from Jim Lehman, son of the late leader of South Whidbey youth sports, Helland said the whole team deserved the award.
