“What does $132,000 buy anymore? For Fire Protection District 3, it buys a lot, a house, future fire truck access to Humphrey Road, and 24-hour fire personnel staffing.Not a bad deal, according to the fire district commissioners.This week, the district will sign papers to purchase a small house and lot directly behind its Central Avenue fire station in Clinton, thereby establishing a district-owned corridor between Central and Humphrey Road that could be used for anything from crew sleeping quarters to station expansion.Fire Chief Don Smith said that in all likelihood, the new property will be used as an inexpensive way of establishing a sleeper program, in which volunteer firefighters will be able to eat, sleep, and work at the station in 24-hour shifts.A sleeper program could give Clinton residents round-the-clock fire protection for the same price they have always paid through property taxes. To establish the same program without the new property acquisition would have meant spending hundreds of thousands of dollars remodeling the Clinton station, Smith said.Buying the new property is considered a bargain at the $132,000 purchase price. The district may have to spend an additional $3,000 for purchasing fees.A renter currently living in the the house will be given several months to relocate.”
