Someone poured gas on the roadway and set it ablaze on Highway 525 near Thompson Road just before midnight Tuesday, but firefighters said the fire flamed out before they arrived.

The roadway was left marked by four black char lines, but otherwise the flames did little damage and did not ignite brush and grass along the roadside.

Fire District 3 Deputy Chief Jon Beck said one engine was dispatched from the Bayview Station to the incident. In the five minutes between receiving the page and arriving, the blaze was out.

“Once the gasoline vapors burned out, it went out,” Beck said. “We just made sure it was all out.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.

“It looks like the individual, whoever it was, poured it across the highway and lit it from the shoulder,” Beck said.
